Dragon Quest may be a JRPG icon in Japan, but the franchise hasn't achieved the same popularity in the West. Square Enix wants to change that, and in recent years, the publisher has been working hard, especially after Dragon Quest 11, which gave it a new lease of life. However, it's mainly with Dragon Quest 3 Remake, released last year, and its sequel, expected this year, that the Japanese giant intends to correct this situation first. However, what players are eagerly awaiting is the famous Dragon Quest 12, which has been plunged into a disturbing silence since its official release. And while we still have no news of the next major episode, its creator has already announced that he is working on a new game.
In addition to Dragon Quest 12, the creator on a new game
There are announcements like this that come out of nowhere. Without warning, Yuji Horii, the iconic creator of the license, revealed that he is working on a brand new game in collaboration with Muneyuki Kaneshiro, the manga artist behind Blue Lock. Let's be clear right away, it should not resemble Dragon Quest in any way. This production, developed by the Japanese studio Any Inc. and ArtePiazza, will take the form of a multiplayer-oriented dark fantasy game based on the board game Sugoroku, particularly popular in Japan. Reincarnation Game, as it is tentatively titled, intends to put some friendships to the test, as the game is designed to create some conflict.
Details are currently slim, but this new project should not impact the development of Dragon Quest 12 in any way. Yuji Horii will only be involved as a consultant, having been drawn to this new project simply because he found it "really interesting and original. I can't wait to create a game that will make everyone laugh and have fun, and that they will want to play again and again," he said in the official press release. Reincarnation Game is expected to be released sometime in 2026 on Nintendo Switch. As for Dragon Quest 12, development is progressing gradually, but we will probably have to wait until the release of DQ 1+2 Remake before we have any real news.
