Dragon's teeth: this new road sign will arrive in France

For several years, Spanish authorities have been experimenting with a new form of road signage known as “dragon’s teeth.” This road marking aims to improve road safety, particularly in urban areas with high pedestrian and cyclist density. But what exactly is this signage, and what are its effects so far?

Innovative Road Signage

“Dragon’s teeth” are road markings consisting of large white triangles placed on either side of the traffic lane. These triangles, by forming a series of repeating patterns, create an optical illusion where the road appears to narrow. This visual phenomenon naturally encourages drivers to slow down, as a narrower lane is perceived as less safe at high speeds.

The “teeth” are arranged in pairs on either side of the roadway or lane. Although there is no specific constraint, typically between 9 and 17 pairs of "teeth" have been used in traffic calming schemes on main roads. The "teeth" can increase in size as one approaches the hazard, or they can all be the same size, usually with a base of 75 cm and a height of 60 cm.

The pilot project has been launched in several Spanish cities. The triangles, visible from a distance, attract drivers' attention and force them to moderate their speed, especially in areas with strict speed limits. In addition, zigzag patterns were painted before pedestrian crossings to signal their proximity and increase motorist vigilance.

Initial results

The main objective of this signage is to reduce speeding in urban areas and to decrease the number of accidents involving pedestrians. The initial results of the pilot project show a certain effectiveness, with a significant reduction in vehicle speeds in the tested areas. Drivers seem to be responding positively to this new form of signage, instinctively slowing down when they see the triangular patterns.

According to Spanish authorities, this measure also aims to educate drivers and reinforce their compliance with traffic rules. Indeed, despite numerous prevention campaigns, incivility on the road remains frequent. Dragon's teeth provide a tangible solution by modifying the road environment to proactively influence driving behavior.

Towards adoption in France and Europe?

Building on these initial successes, the "dragon's teeth" concept is attracting interest from other European countries. France, for example, is seriously considering testing this signage on its own urban roads. The decision will depend on the final results of the Spanish experiments, but enthusiasm is palpable among road safety authorities.

Other countries could follow this example if the benefits continue to be confirmed. The ability of “dragon’s teeth” to attract drivers’ attention and induce a slowdown in speed could make them a valuable tool for combating speeding and improving pedestrian safety.

While “dragon’s teeth” cannot correct all dangerous behaviors, they can help avoid them in some cases. By changing drivers’ visual environment, this signage can influence behavior in a subtle but effective way. If tests in Spain continue to show positive results, this measure could well become a model for the whole of Europe.
