This is an announcement we didn't see coming. In recent years, numerous video game projects related to the Marvel universe have been announced by various companies. Among them was a Black Panther game, unveiled by EA in 2023 and entrusted to what was supposed to be one of its new studios: Cliffhanger Games. Since then, with the exception of a few clues gleaned here and there, the title has not officially been heard of again. And unfortunately, it turns out that it will no longer have the opportunity.
Black Panther game canceled by EA
Indeed, in a report published a few hours ago in its columns, the media IGN tells us that the Black Panther game has finally been canceled by EA, which is also taking the opportunity to close the doors of Cliffhanger Games. In an email sent to the entire company, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, justified this decision by stating that it was intended to "better target [their] action and put [their] creative energy at the service of the most significant growth opportunities."
"These are difficult decisions," Miele continued. "They affect people with whom we have worked, learned, and shared real moments. We are doing everything in our power to help them - including finding opportunities within EA, where we have successfully helped people move into new roles." Because, indeed, the fact is that Black Panther and Cliffhanger Games are not the only victims of this decision. Electronic Arts, however, declined to elaborate on the number of people affected.
A ruthless industry
This is a huge blow for the Cliffhanger Games team, who ultimately will never have had the opportunity to present a single image of Black Panther since the studio opened in 2023. And it's all the more difficult since some of its members came from Monolith Studios, which also experienced complicated times at Warner Bros after the release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War in 2017. A studio which, incidentally, was also closed earlier this year while he was working on a Wonder Woman game.
This definitively closes the chapter on Black Panther, a single-player open-world action-adventure game that we will never see. Fortunately, the Iron Man project developed at Motive Studios does not seem to be affected in any way for the moment. Let's take this opportunity to remind you that the superhero from Wakanda will still be featured in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the first game from Skydance New Media coming in early 2026.
