Fiber deployment: Orange stalls, Arcep grumbles

Tens of thousands of requests for fiber optic connections were not honored within the allotted time by Orange, according to a source in Le Monde. The operator had, however, committed to the State to complete the deployment of fiber in medium-sized cities as well as on the outskirts of large cities. It even spoke of a "right to connection," allowing anyone who wants it to have access to fiber within six months.

Arcep is keeping a close eye on things

Arcep should very quickly hold the company accountable. And if Orange doesn't comply, a fine could follow. The ISP will have to work harder, despite the connection difficulties. We're talking about homes located in complicated areas like residential areas far from everything, places where technicians have to be very delicate to properly install fiber optics.

Arcep is keeping a close eye on things: there's no question of giving Orange the reins, especially since copper will have disappeared by 2030 and the authorities have clearly indicated that fiber optics are the essential technological choice for the very high-speed broadband plan. Emmanuel Macron had committed to fiber optic access for 100% of French homes... this year. The operator had tried to play a different tune, but to no avail.

Orange probably won't want to repeat the unfortunate episode of November 2023: the communications regulator fined the company €26 million for not respecting a fiber optic deployment schedule. We're not getting out of it.
