Gladiator on TV tonight: where is the third film?

This Monday, May 26, TF1 Séries Films is offering viewers the opportunity to (re)discover Gladiator, Ridley Scott's masterpiece released in 2000, starring Russell Crowe as Maximus. Twenty-five years after its release, the film has lost none of its power or its ability to unite a wide audience. After a second installment released in 2024, we take stock of the third and final installment of the saga, which already promises to amaze us.

Gladiator III: where are we now?

After the success of Gladiator II in 2024, centered on the character of Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), Ridley Scott has confirmed his intention to continue the adventure with a third film. The director has already started writing the script, and reportedly even has a very good draft, intended to offer a grandiose conclusion to the saga. In an interview with EW, he explains: “People ask me if a third movie is possible. And I say, ‘Sure!’ It’s a knee-jerk response. Have we figured out how to do it yet? Not really.”

There’s no doubt about it. The abrupt end to the adventures of Lucius Verus left viewers in the lurch. Despite the questionable reception of the second installment, it’s a safe bet that Ridley Scott will win his case and get the ball rolling again. The director has hinted that the action could move away from the arenas to explore other provinces of the Roman Empire, thus giving a new lease of life to the saga. The fate of Lucius, the sole survivor of the events of Gladiator II, is expected to be at the heart of the plot.

The full cast has not yet been announced, but Paul Mescal's presence seems certain. While he wasn't the production's first choice, the actor has already confirmed that he will don his Spartans again to conclude his character's bloody epic in style.

When is it out?

Rumors suggest a possible December 2026 release, but the wait could be long. The saga, which mixes action and historical epic, could not arrive until 2027, or even 2028, depending on the progress of filming and behind-the-scenes negotiations. While patience is still required before discovering this new chapter, the broadcast of Gladiator tonight on TF1 Séries Films is the perfect opportunity to dive back into Ridley Scott's epic universe and wait for the sequel.
