As expected, there was (a lot of) talk about AI during the Google I/O keynote. And unfortunately, the search engine has a nasty habit of overwhelming the audience with code names, unfathomable technologies, and other figures so dizzying that they no longer mean anything. At the same time, it's a conference for developers and not necessarily aimed at the general public.
A stunning virtual try-on for your online purchases
However, sometimes through all this esoteric-technical fog, a feature emerges that speaks to everyone. This is the case with virtual try-on technology! Simply take a photo of yourself, preferably from head to toe, to be able to virtually try on clothes seen online.
The user will be able to see how clothes (shirts, pants, skirts, dresses) fit on their body. The system takes into account details such as material, pleats or fit, on several body types. To take advantage of this, you must register with Search Labs and be in the United States.
Google Meet translates voice in real time, without betraying it
There was a lot of talk about real-time translation during Google I/O, in many forms (including those of the future Android XR glasses). Google Workspace's Meet app now includes such a tool that goes much further than simple translation: it's a near-instant, low-latency voice translation that preserves the voice, tone, and even expressions of the callers.
This new service is available today to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers (more on that later), in English and Spanish. More languages will be added in the coming weeks.
Google Beam: Realistic 3D Video Conferencing
Google usually uses its developer conference to present projects that won't come to fruition for a few years, if they ever do. Project Starline, which dates back to 2021, has received an update. This 3D video conferencing technology has been renamed Google Beam, and it retains its impressive appearance as always.
Google now presents Beam as a communication platform. It relies (obviously) on AI and volumetric video to display callers in realistic 3D, regardless of where the callers are located.
2D video streams, captured by three cameras, are transformed into immersive video with depth, direct gaze, and subtle expression maintenance that prevents the experience from falling into the uncanny valley. And Meet's voice translation is there. Google is working with HP, Zoom, Salesforce, Deloitte, and others to integrate Beam into businesses.
A new AI Ultra subscription for $250!
Finally, let's end this short overview, which doesn't claim to be exhaustive, with... AI, once again! Google is launching a new AI Ultra subscription for $250 (currently only in the US). That's $50 more than OpenAI's most expensive solo subscription...
Subscribers will obviously get access to all of Gemini's features, including the new Veo 3 video template and the Flow tool for filmmakers who are fans of generative AI. 30TB of storage (!) is also offered, as is... a YouTube Premium subscription.
