Google I/O 2025: A new era of AI between search, universal assistants and intelligent agents

Google I/O 2025: A new era of AI between search, universal assistants and intelligent agents

While Microsoft Build 2025 has just ended, with the highly acclaimed presentation of the new NLWeb standard, it is now Google's turn to take the lead with Google I/O.

Launched this Tuesday, May 20th through several online conferences, the event presented numerous innovations, more specifically around artificial intelligence.

With a second day taking place today, has Google I/O managed to keep all its promises?

Launch of “AI Mode”

Starting this week, Google users should have access to a new “AI Mode” tab. Present within the search bar, this feature will allow users to interact directly with Google Gemini to present answers via text and through links to websites.

With this new feature, a new search mode is emerging for Google, and the impacts should be felt in the coming months according to specialists.

And while the feature should be useful for users, there is also a real commercial interest for Google. The "AI Mode" should be monetized with advertising recommendations, and other tools like the possibility of trying on clothes online.

A universal AI assistant for Google Gemini

During this first day of Google I/O, the company also took the opportunity to announce a very big new feature around Google Gemini. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Deepmind, said this development would help achieve the “ultimate vision” of Google Gemini.

In concrete terms, this development should allow Google Gemini to be integrated into multiple devices, while taking into account the context presented. While the practical implementation remains abstract, this development should bring a productivity gain on time-consuming daily tasks.

Project Mariner, the super AI agents

One of the most impressive presentations of this first day is Project Mariner. This feature, which is similar to Manus AI, uses several AI agents to carry out different tasks.

During Google I/O, the firm presented several examples such as purchases on e-commerce sites, booking a plane ticket, or very advanced searches.

Available today for users with a Google AI Ultra subscription, its price is already being heavily criticized. To take advantage of Project Mariner, you will have to pay $250 per month.
