Google is starting to roll out its new colorful interface on smartwatches. The Pixel Watch is already getting a preview of this change. Google Calendar tiles are evolving to better adapt to circular screens.
Every year, Google gradually modernizes the interface of its devices. After transforming the appearance of Android with Material You, the company is now tackling its connected objects. Wear OS, the system dedicated to watches, will gradually adopt a richer aesthetic. Until now, the interface remained very functional, but visually sober. This new round of graphical updates aims to improve readability and visual consistency on small screens.
The Pixel Watch is the first to benefit from this new visual identity. A user on Reddit shared screenshots showing an update to the Google Calendar tiles. These are now displayed with more rounded buttons, dynamic colors, and better use of space. This change is based on Material 3 Expressive, an evolution of the principles of Material Design 3, presented by Google in May 2025. The objective is to adapt the interface to the specificities of watches: circular, compact screens, where every pixel counts.
Google Calendar tiles adopt Material 3 Expressive on the Pixel Watch 3
With Material 3 Expressive, interactions become more fluid. New animations improve user comfort and the display becomes more vibrant. On the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3, Google Calendar tiles have a better information density without making it difficult to read. Buttons like “More” and “Calendar” are better positioned and more visible. This redesign allows for quick and intuitive consultation, essential for use on the wrist. Even if the changes seem minor, they significantly improve the ergonomics of the interface.
For now, the rollout is progressive. Even with the latest version of the application installed, not all users will immediately see the new tiles. Google is likely limiting the release to test the rendering and gather feedback before rolling it out more widely. This approach should apply to other Wear OS applications, pending the release of Wear OS 6. This future version of the system will bring greater visual consistency, with animated elements, dynamic themes, and buttons adapted to rounded shapes. According to the company, these changes will not have a negative effect on battery life. On the contrary, it announces an efficiency gain of around 10%.
