Google is stirring up excitement around its future mixed reality glasses

Google is stirring up excitement around its future mixed reality glasses

The art and manner of stirring things up. The president of Android gave a little nod to Android XR just before wrapping up the Android Show, during which he shared dishes between two new features for Android 16. Sameer Samat donned sunglasses that could well be the connected models running Android XR. The executive promised demos at the next Google I/O, next week.

Gemini, the brains behind Android XR

Android XR is the famous operating system for mixed reality (XR) devices that Google has been cooking up for some time. Samsung will be the first manufacturer to use the platform with the "Moohan project," a headset that shares more than a little family resemblance with the Vision Pro.

While waiting for news of a commercial launch, Samsung also confirmed that it is working with Google on augmented reality glasses. Could these glasses be officially unveiled during Google I/O?

These glasses and headset will also benefit from Gemini. Google has confirmed, without much surprise, that Android XR will include the search engine's AI models. This integration will offer "new ways to interact with the next generation of devices, from headsets to glasses, and everything in between." This is a way to cast as wide a net as possible!

Google also gives an example of the possibilities offered by Gemini in Android XR: helping with trip planning "by immersing you in videos, maps and local tips, creating a complete itinerary in minutes while giving you a more realistic idea of the place you're exploring." Nothing too crazy, but it's always more engaging than the Vision Pro's image generation tool.
