Google's interest in cars continues unabated. A few days before its Google I/O event and alongside the official launch of Android 16, the Mountain View company has reserved one of its biggest surprises for Android Auto. Gemini, Google's AI assistant, will be deployed in Android Auto and will become accessible in the car. The benefit? Facilitating interactions between the driver and its platform through voice dictation. But more than just voice commands for Android, Gemini also makes its search and translation capabilities available to every car owner with an Android device.
Just as it's possible to submit certain requests to Gemini on your smartphone, it will be possible to send it to your car as soon as it runs Android Auto or Android Automotive. The same goes for translation, since from its launch, Gemini for cars can speak and write in 40 languages. Of course, Gemini can also be used for its search functions, whether for a restaurant break or for the best places to visit nearby. Google is thus responding in the best possible way to manufacturers who are striving to integrate ChatGPT into their vehicles with varying degrees of success.
Gemini: a little more Google in the car
The other advantage of Gemini is that it is perfectly connected to other Google tools and Play Store apps. This will make queries to Google Maps, YouTube Music, and even Spotify easily understandable. The benefit of such integration is that it simplifies requests. Google explains, for example, that you can make requests like "show me the way to where my son is playing his soccer game this afternoon." From then on, Gemini will be able to search through received emails, find the exact information, and display it on Google Maps.
Finally, the arrival of Gemini will be accompanied by a greater opening of the Play Store for Android Auto. The catalog, previously very limited, will include a larger number of compatible applications (Google does not disclose their number), including games, which will help pass the time when your electric car is charging, for example.
The arrival of Gemini in Android Auto affects a significant number of drivers. Google estimates that more than 250 million cars on the road are compatible with its on-board system. To this already high number, we must add more than 50 models that go even further, since they work directly under Google Automotive, this is the case of recent vehicles from Renault or Volvo for example, like the electric R5 E-Tech or the Volvo EX90 that we tested.
