Switch 2: Nintendo's trick to preserve the battery

The Switch 2 will give players a choice: either full battery life or slightly reduced battery life, but to preserve the battery's health in the long term.

Switch 2: Nintendo's trick to preserve the battery

The Nintendo Switch 2 is an expensive product, so it's normal for players to demand that it be durable. We also hope that the manufacturer will fix the Joy-Con drift issues on this generation. But on this type of device, one of the first components to suffer is often the battery.

On its Nintendo Today app, Big N shared a video explaining that the Switch 2 has an option to preserve the battery's health in the long term. In the portable console's settings, users will be able to enable an option that limits the battery charge to approximately 90% of its maximum capacity, helping to slow down its degradation charge cycle after charge cycle.

An option to improve battery endurance on the Switch 2

This feature “reduces the amount of time the system can be used when unplugged, but can help reduce battery capacity loss over time,” explains Nintendo. Because yes, that's the trade-off: the Switch 2's battery life will inevitably be lower if the battery's full potential isn't used. Depending on your gaming habits, it will be up to you to determine whether it's in your best interest to enable this option or not. Remember that the autonomy of the Switch 2 is a priori lower than that of the Switch 1, despite a larger battery.

This is the first time Nintendo has integrated such a feature into one of its products. The idea, however, isn't new at all and is even becoming more and more popular in the tech industry. We're seeing it particularly on our smartphones, whether Android or iPhone. Generally, the system limits battery charging to 80% of its capacity to avoid damaging it. Charging power reduction is another popular feature to prevent battery degradation, but this mainly concerns devices compatible with very powerful chargers. The Switch 2 is not expected to offer such an option.
