While the process of setting up a smart TV with Google TV isn't all that long, Google still seems intent on improving the experience. The goal is simple: shorten the steps, facilitate connections, and reduce the size of apps. This update is rolling out first to two TVs, before expanding to more devices in the coming months.
Google TV simplifies first-time setup
Activating a new TV has never been a piece of cake, but Google wants to make it as painless as possible. In a blog post, the company announced several optimizations to the Google TV setup process. The first notable change: more seamless integration with smartphones. On Android, an automatic notification will warn you that the TV is ready to be set up, making startup almost instantaneous. For iOS users, a QR code will appear on the screen to allow for setup with the least possible friction.
Another important improvement: app installation. Until now, this could take some time and quickly saturate device storage. Google is now promising a faster process, with smaller files. This not only saves time, but also provides long-term peace of mind, with less cluttered storage space.
The first TVs affected and compatibility with connected devices
This new installation method will not be rolled out universally right away. It will debut on the Hisense U7 and U8 TVs, released in 2025, before gradually arriving on other models.
At the same time, Google is also improving Google TV's compatibility with connected devices in the home. The Home ecosystem already allows you to pause a video via a smart speaker: this function, among others, should become even more responsive. A subtle way for Google to remind you that its Assistant is still very present, even if it is more discreet.
