With this small change, Microsoft is taking a giant step towards eliminating passwords.

If you didn't know, the days of passwords are numbered. This practice of securing data and accounts is in the sights of all tech giants for one simple reason: it is no longer considered secure, even with a strong password.

Microsoft is among the most advanced companies on the subject, since the company behind Windows has long allowed the creation of a Windows session without any password. The Redmond company is taking a new step today, according to The Verge.

"New Microsoft accounts will now be 'passwordless by default'"

When creating a new Microsoft account, by default, users will no longer be prompted to create a password. Instead, they will be suggested to use more secure methods such as pass keys or push notifications. It seems that it will still be possible to create a password if you wish, but Microsoft will no longer push you to do so.

It may seem like nothing, but remember that Windows still has the largest market share of PC operating systems (over 75%). And when the leader in a sector so present in the daily lives of billions of users no longer pushes them to create a password when creating an account, this will necessarily have a significant impact.

You can keep your password, but Microsoft would prefer that you delete it

As for existing users, don't panic, they will of course be able to keep their password. But the company also clarifies in its official communication: "Existing users can go to their account settings to remove their password." The implication is clear: you should get rid of your password.

The company seems to be in the process of fundamentally overhauling the way its login systems work. Recently, for example, it made it more difficult to launch a Windows PC without using a Microsoft account.

For the record, Microsoft is so done with passwords that it renamed World Password Day to World Passkey Day.
