Available for some time in Asia, the Reon range is finally arriving in France! But what is Sony's Reon Pocket range? To put it simply, it's a range of devices that are placed at the back of the neck and serve to cool the part in contact with the device. Yes, you read that right, we're talking about a kind of cooler (or heater) for people.
While in Asia, we're already at the Reon Pocket 5, Sony is taking advantage of the arrival of summer to announce its successor, the Reon Pocket Pro, to the world. Two notable new features compared to previous versions in Asia. The Sony Reon Pocket Pro can now operate without necessarily using an app (iOS or Android). The app is still available to more easily control the Reon Pocket Pro, but there is now a remote control and controls on the Reon itself. And compared to the Reon Pocket 5, the Reon Pocket Pro now has two independent thermal modules as well as a new fan that will dissipate heat faster (Sony speaks of a start twice as fast).
The packaging is quite basic since it integrates in a white box the Reon Pocket Pro, an external temperature and humidity sensor in the form of a sort of remote control, a USB-C charging cable and two “evacuation tubes”. The latter are chosen according to what you are wearing. For those who haven’t understood everything, the Reon Pocket Pro comes in the form of a device that is placed around the neck but which is positioned on the nape of the neck. Indeed, we know that the neck is an important area for regulating temperature in the body. Also, it is via the neck that we will be able to gain temperature. The Sony Reon Pocket Pro is thus able to cool or heat the metal surface in contact with the user's neck.
Added to this is a heat dissipation fan with twice the airflow of its predecessor and a heat dissipation mechanism to improve heat absorption, with cooling performance improved up to about twice that of the previous model. From the application, you can either manually manage cooling (or heating), but with summer approaching, it is mainly its Smart Cool function that interests us, which allows you to automatically start or stop cooling and heating. The Smart Cool mode intelligently adapts to its environment by analyzing user behavior, temperature, and humidity to provide not only effective cooling but also battery life of up to 15 hours according to Sony.
In practice, and from our initial tests, all of this seems to work well indeed. To put it simply, the Sony Reon Pocket Pro works a bit like a PC. Basically, the human body is the central processor of the PC and the Sony Reon Pocket Pro is nothing other than the radiator that dissipates the heat emanating from the user's body. With the current temperatures in Paris, it was difficult to test the product in real conditions but in the metro for example, we noted that it did indeed help regulate heat and perspiration. Now, we will really wait until summer to decide.
Price and availability
The Sony Reon Pocket Pro will be available for pre-order from May 20, 2025, at a price of 229 euros. So yes, it's more expensive than a simple fan, but it doesn't blow hot air and can be much more effective.
