Who among Jurassic World, Superman, or Fantastic Four will be crowned king of the summer movies in France and around the world? None of the three mentioned here, according to the JustWatch rankings. This May, and while Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch kicked off hostilities last week, the German site is taking stock of the cinematic landscape in France.
Using several data points such as trailer viewings, the number of connections to pages dedicated to the films, as well as additions to the playlist, the firm has established a popularity score for summer blockbusters. Between January 1st and May 19th, 2025, JustWatch users showed more interest in Ethan Hunt's final adventures than any other film. The Final Reckoning has a popularity score of 97 and is in first place in the ranking.
Next comes another saga, which has not been seen on screen since 2007. 28 years later, directed by Danny Boyle from a screenplay by Alex Garland, attracts the attention of the French public with a score of 91. Jurassic World: Renaissance, which is intended to relaunch the franchise with new characters after the commercial success of Colin Trevorrow's film: The World After, takes the bronze medal. The film starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey received a score of 69 out of 100. Lilo & Stitch came in fifth place, just behind Ballerina, which is due out in theaters on June 4. The franchises continue to dominate the charts, proof, if proof were needed, that nostalgia is a moneymaker.
Do Marvel and DC have cause for concern?
While their duel at the top is already generating a lot of buzz, Marvel and DC may not win in France. Fantastic Four and Superman are only in 8th and 6th place in the rankings offered by JustWatch. They respectively obtain a score of 35 and 48. The first must, however, open a new chapter in the history of the MCU as much as prepare the next Avengers film. The adventures of Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Sue and Johnny Storm is the first foray of the famous team into cinema since the films of Tim Story and the failed attempt of Josh Trank.
For its part, Superman serves as a launch for the new DC cinematic universe. Under the aegis of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the film carried by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan is eagerly awaited by those who have not adhered to the recent productions of DC Studios. The positions of two films in the French ranking are not particularly reassuring, while a lack of interest among spectators for the genre is beginning to be felt. Despite strong sales pitches and excellent word of mouth, Thunderbolts* stalled in its fourth week. Jake Shreier's film only grossed $350 million at the global box office.
A box office indicator?
The JustWatch ranking is obviously not a crystal ball for predicting the commercial successes of summer 2025. This weekend's box office has already proven it wrong. At the end of their first weekend of operation, Lilo & Stitch as well as Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning distinguished themselves with excellent revenues, nevertheless, the little blue alien won over Ethan Hunt. Worldwide, the live-action Lilo & Stitch brought in 341.7 million dollars. It is the best launch of the year internationally, far ahead of Mission: Impossible 8 and its 204 million.
In France, the Disney film also dominated the box office last Wednesday. It achieved the best opening of the year with no fewer than 260,000 admissions and an average of 82 admissions per screening. Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible attracted 95,000 spectators and established itself as the fifth best opening of 2025. See you next fall to draw conclusions from these busy summer months of franchise releases at the cinema.
