Mitsubishi is preparing an electric car to be produced in Taiwan by Foxconn. Yes, the same Foxconn that makes iPhones is entering the automotive industry.

Largely lagging behind the competition in the all-electric market, Mitsubishi is developing a new model, which is expected to be released in the second half of 2026. If the Japanese carmaker, which is part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, takes care of the design part, the manufacturing will be subcontracted to a certain Foxconn, a company well known for handling the assembly of Apple iPhones.

The BBC reports that an agreement in principle has been reached between Mitsubishi Motors and Foxconn for the production of a 100% electric car in factories located in Taiwan. This agreement is currently non-binding and negotiations must continue between the two entities to finalize it.

Mitsubishi calls on Foxconn

For Foxconn, this is the first major contract of this type with the automotive industry. The Taiwanese company, which had already announced its interest in the automotive market, could take advantage of the transaction to acquire shares in the Nissan Motor Group.

Specifically, Foxtron will be responsible for producing Mitsubishi electric cars. Foxtron is a joint venture created by Foxconn and the (also Taiwanese) car manufacturer Yulon Motor, which specializes in electric vehicles. “Foxtron will provide design and manufacturing management services,” we learned.

For Mitsubishi, the challenge is to finally truly launch itself into the all-electric market, which it has long neglected. Establishing oneself there risks being complicated, given that a number of players are already well established and faced with the emergence of Chinese brands, such as BYD, which are aiming to conquer the world.

BYD, increasingly present in Europe for example, has already surpassed Tesla's turnover in 2024, accumulating revenues of 98 billion euros thanks to the sale of 4.3 million vehicles. BYD is counting on aggressive pricing as well as a catalog shared between hybrid and 100% electric to stand out from the crowd and convince consumers. We will see in a little over a year what Mitsubishi will offer to fight back.
