Only two short weeks left before the release of the Nintendo Switch2. The Nintendo console is expected on June 5th, and will allow us to discover Mario Kart World, the next installment of the legendary license.
This is an event, since the last major installment dates back to 2014 with the release of Mario Kart8 on Wii U. In 2017 with the Switch, we were simply treated to a remaster of the game with Mario Kart8 Deluxe.
However, we have just learned that Mario Kart World was originally planned for the first Switch. But technical issues forced the teams to postpone the game's development on the new console.
Mario Kart World: A Switch game that has become more ambitious?
It was during a recent interview "Ask the Developer» that Nintendo has returned to the development of the next Mario Kart World. The manufacturer confirms that the title was originally planned for the first Switch. Before the project was postponed, from 2020, to become a launch title for the Switch2. Mario Kart World will now be an exclusive game for the new console and will not be released on the supposed Switch model.
Kenta Sato, the game's technical director, explains that development on Mario Kart World began sometime after the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, around 2018. Sato explains that the teams were immediately faced with issues, requiring them to consider technical compromises such as reduced graphics, lower resolution with a 30 frames per second limit. According to the technical director, it was a "complicated" period. Especially since the first Switch had been on sale for less than a year.
It was finally from 2020 that the decision was made to abandon the project on the Switch to develop this next game on the Switch2. It was at this time that Nintendo was able to give the first indications and estimates of the specificities of the new machine. The continuation of the development of Mario Kart World was done with provisional estimates which were finally able to be realized.
Kenta Sato confirms that this decision made it possible to create a more ambitious game without sacrificing graphics or fluidity.
It remains quite worrying to see that from the first year of the Switch's release, developers were already facing difficulties related to the console's power. It remains to be seen if this will also be the case with this Switch2.
