When we think of the actor with the most Marvel films to his credit, we often think of Robert Downey Jr. But the man who played Iron Man for eleven years and who will soon return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (after a seven-year absence), is surpassed by two other actors.
Robert Downey Jr.: Eleven Years as Iron Man
Within the Marvel galaxy, Robert Downey Jr. is undoubtedly one of the most popular actors. He launched the MCU in 2008 by playing Iron Man in the eponymous film. His charismatic and humorous Tony Stark quickly established himself as the leader of the Avengers. His emotional finale in 2019's Endgame cemented his legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the founding father of the superhero team. Between 2008 and 2019, "RDJ" was the most-starring actor in the House of Ideas' film productions, with ten appearances. A record in such a short period of time. But since his character's tragic end, he has been overtaken by several actors.
Nick Fury and Captain America dethrone RDJ
It is now Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) who holds the absolute record for appearances. With a total of fourteen (including the series Secret Invasion and Agents of SHIELD), the creator of the Avengers has been involved since Endgame, notably in Spider-Man: Far From Home and The Marvels. He was also there at the genesis of the MCU thanks to his cameo in the first Iron Man.
Robert Downey is also beaten by another member of the first team of Avengers: Chris Evans, (Steve Rogers / Captain America). Between the films dedicated to the savior of America, the four Avengers, as well as his cameos in Homecoming, Thor: The Dark World, Deadpool & Wolverine (via his character of Johnny Storm, one of the Fantastic Four) as well as in a post-credits scene of Ant-Man, there are eleven appearances for the 43-year-old actor.
But the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU, and this time in the role of Doctor Doom (or Doctor Doom) in Avengers: Doomsday next year (and perhaps in Fantastic Four: First Steps in a post-credits scene), certainly relaunches his career at Marvel. The opportunity to regain the upper hand over his peers.
