There are some figures that make you smile. $1.3 billion is the sum earned by Deadpool and Wolverine, released in the summer of 2024 and now available on Disney+, at the box office, bringing in, after splitting with investors and exhibitors, nearly $400 million in profits for Disney, reported the American media outlet Deadline a few days ago. Enough to put a smile on your face and give ideas to Marvel Studios, now on a roll this year after the excellent feedback on its latest film, Thunderbolts and while waiting for the big summer hit that is The Fantastic Four, scheduled for July 23 on the big screen.
Besides having settled some scores on the Fox side, by rehabilitating some of its forgotten characters (Blade, Gambit, Elektra...) and allowing Deadpool and his troubled buddy Wolverine to join the MCU, the film carried out by Ryan Reynolds – actor, co-writer and producer on the project – has notably allowed the person concerned to have influence with Kevin Feige, the big boss of Marvel Studios productions. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds, more than a sequel to one of the most lucrative films of last year, has an idea in mind for his character, an idea he has constantly teased in the first installments of Deadpool in theaters: to associate him with the X-Men.
X-Men presented in an “unexpected” way
As we know, the latter are arriving in the MCU and should, without any twists, constitute phase 7 of this connected and extended universe. A film project, written by Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games), is on track. And Ryan Reynolds' film would not come in confrontation with the latter but rather as an offbeat addition... like Deadpool & Wolverine is today. In theory, the feature film currently being considered by Reynolds would feature Deadpool, but not in the lead role this time. He would share the spotlight with a few X-Men (we're talking about three or four members of the team) and the latter would be more prominent than his character, in an "unexpected" register.
The actor, convinced that his character should never join the Avengers - so as not to give him what he wants and keep this unique side - would, however, like to see him evolve occasionally in a team - he forms the X-Force in his second film. He has already made numerous references to the X-Men in Deadpool 1 and 2, fought with some of them (Colossus, Cable, Wolverine) and faced some of their enemies (The Stand, the former members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Sabretooth). For the moment, Ryan Reynolds' project has not been presented to Marvel Studios, and this approach for the actor is not an isolated case, since he had proceeded in this way for Deadpool 3. For the success that we know.
