MCU: Those Times Marvel Changed Scenes Between Trailers and Movies

MCU: Those Times Marvel Changed Scenes Between Trailers and Movies

Sometimes, for various reasons, the trailers for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films are a little different from the final cut of the films in question. We'll explain. Sometimes, when the first trailers for Marvel films are released online, certain shots are altered compared to the final cut of the film. The reasons? Either because the special effects aren't finished, or to hide a potential spoiler. The most striking example is the Hulk's presence in the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War during the Battle of Wakanda, while he is absent from this scene in the final cut of the film. So we decided to revisit these scenes from Marvel movie trailers that aren't in the movies.

Often, it's details

Often, it's details that are changed. Lighting, the size of a shot, the color grading, a simple line. Small changes that don't really affect the plot of the film. For example, in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi completely changed the background of a sequence with Thor. He also changed the CGI of a dialogue between Thor and a child. A sequence that had caused a lot of noise because of the poor quality of the special effects. But nothing that has a big impact. But sometimes, these changes are much more important than they seem. The proof is in these 4 examples.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

The final installment of the trilogy led by Tom Holland is an example of this phenomenon. Indeed, the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home presented some differences from the final cut of the film. For example, one shot features Spider-Man in his usual costume. In the final shot of the film, Peter Parker wears the Iron Spider.

But the best example of these changes is obviously the iconic shot of the three Spider-Men on the Statue of Liberty. A cult shot in which the three Spider-Men stand side by side. In the trailer, unsurprisingly, in this same shot, only Tom Holland's Spider-Man is present.

Thor: Ragnarok

This shot was much talked about at the time. The trailer for Taika Waititi's film revealed to viewers that Hela was going to destroy Mjolnir. Except that the shot in the trailer and the one in the film are very different. While in the trailer Hela destroys Mjolnir on Asgard, in the final cut of the film, she destroys the artifact in a natural setting, where Odin has gone to recharge his batteries. Similarly, in the film's trailer, Thor still has both eyes, thus avoiding spoilers for the loss of his eye.

Captain America: Civil War

You'll obviously remember the confrontation between Cap and Iron Man's camps at the end of the film. An iconic battle on an airport tarmac. A sequence that also serves as a backdrop for Spider-Man's introduction to the MCU. And while this sequence is teased in the film's trailer, Peter Parker has been digitally erased from the various trailers for Captain America: Civil War.

Avengers: Infinity War

But the best examples of these changes can be found in Avengers: Infinity War. To avoid spoilers, the Russo brothers hid certain elements of the film in the various trailers for the Marvel blockbuster. As mentioned in the introduction, Hulk was notably the target of these changes. Remember, at the beginning of Infinity War, Hulk gets beaten up by Thanos. A one-sided fight that forces the Jade Giant to stay hidden behind Bruce Banner. During the Battle of Wakanda, Bruce then uses Tony Stark's Hulkbuster. But to avoid spoilers, Hulk nevertheless appears in the Battle of Wakanda in the film's trailer.

Another example, in the film's trailer, when Thanos appears on Titan, he doesn't have the same number of Infinity Stones as in the final cut of the film. Again, this is a process to avoid possible spoilers. Avengers: Infinity War is probably the film that is most affected by these various changes between trailers and final cut.
