In One Piece, many characters possess extraordinary abilities. Some are granted following the ingestion of a Devil Fruit, others are innate, like Haki. It is possible to combine both, like Luffy, Boa Hancock, or Borsalino, aka Kizaru, and even to possess several Haki. This phenomenon is much rarer than possessing two different Devil Fruits. And recently, Eiichiro Oda revealed which of the Devil Fruits or Haki is more powerful.
Which is more powerful, Haki or Devil Fruits?
Very often, in One Piece, everything is about power. And as the characters that make up Eiichiro Oda's universe are forced to fight again, fans can discover the full extent of their abilities. A world that has been constantly expanding since its publication, for a One Piece currently open on the island of Elbaf and its threats. Among them, the Five Elders. And unfortunately for the Straw Hat Pirates, the Five Elders are possibly immortal. Their injuries regenerate extremely quickly, their longevity seems terribly long, and their powers are devastating.
Haki possessors succeed one another as the story progresses, leaving fans to wonder about the power offered by Haki. While Devil Fruits delight readers and spectators alike, Haki has taken a certain place in duels and in the presentation of characters. Observation Haki, Armament Haki, Haki of Kings, abilities with powerful powers that remain present in all living beings. However, only a chosen few can use them.
And since the introduction of Haki in One Piece, fans have wondered whether Haki or Devil Fruits is more powerful. A thorny question to which Eiichiro Oda has recently provided some clarification. Although the final result depends above all on the user and their intrinsic strength, it is still possible to separate the two.
Devil Fruits and Haki, two sides of the same coin
On one side, Devil Fruits grant special abilities to those who have eaten them, in exchange for their ability to swim. Those who have eaten a Devil Fruit are condemned to never be able to swim again. Worse still, the person will sink like an anvil to the bottom of the ocean. A problem that persists when in contact with seawater or Sea Granite. Despite everything, the power offered by the Devil Fruit is supposed to counteract this curse.
On the other hand, Haki, or Fluid, is an ability present in every living being but awakened by a minority. Its possessor can use their mind to predict their opponent's movements or detect their presence thanks to Observation Haki, create invisible armor and counter the attacks of Devil Fruit possessors with Armament Haki, or even render anyone unconscious via Kings' Haki. However, most living beings are unaware of Haki's capabilities and don't even awaken it.
Devil Fruits or Haki?
By listing the advantages and weaknesses of Haki and Devil Fruits, we realize that one is a little more advantageous than the other. And unfortunately for Devil Fruit defenders, it is possible to be a legendary warrior thanks to Haki alone, while being a Devil Fruit owner is often not enough. As proof, the most powerful warriors in One Piece often fall back on their Haki for their confrontations. At the same time, Armament Haki is THE perfect counter to Devil Fruits, so it's hard to do without it.
Furthermore, it's possible that Haki is the source of the Five Elders' immortality. But as Scopper Gaban proved by cutting off Shepherd Sommers' arm, their regenerative abilities have their limits. Aside from the fact that Haki's full capabilities haven't been revealed yet, and that its user doesn't suffer any penalties, it's hard not to see it as One Piece's ultimate weapon. Eiichiro Oda offers us rare elements of answers here and there, but with the chapters focusing on the Five Elders and their abilities, it's possible that we'll learn more soon about the powers offered by Haki.
