Meta's Ray-Ban glasses offer augmented vision and live translation

Meta's Ray-Ban glasses offer augmented vision and live translation

Since last November, Meta AI has been available in France on its Ray-Ban connected frames. Until now, the assistant simply answered questions asked by voice, playing the answers through the integrated speakers. But all that is already a thing of the past. With the new update, the glasses will be able to use their camera to analyze the environment in real time. Just ask: "Hey Meta, what's this building?" and the assistant will give the answer (beware of hallucinations though).

Translate without taking out the dictionary

This new feature is coming this week to France, as well as Belgium, Germany, and other European countries where Meta AI is active. Meta is following a trend that we also see with other AI giants like OpenAI or Google, but with a little something extra: everything happens right on the tip of your nose, without taking out your phone.

Another new feature tailor-made for the holidays: instant translation. Ray-Ban Meta glasses will be able to translate conversations in English, French, Spanish, and Italian live. And the good news is, it will work even without an internet connection, provided you download the language pack before you leave. This way, you can ask for directions or order a coffee without struggling to find the right words.

Meta doesn't stop there. Users will also be able to send and receive messages, photos, and even make audio and video calls on Instagram, in addition to WhatsApp and Messenger. The idea is to stay connected with friends without taking out your smartphone, just by saying "Hey Meta, send a message to Lisa on Instagram."

The music side is also evolving. The glasses are gaining access to Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Shazam outside the United States and Canada, for anyone whose primary language is English. Just ask, "Hey Meta, what's the name of this song?" to get an instant answer.

Meta is also continuing to work on future models. In the pipeline, a pair of glasses with a small screen to display information and applications. And for those who find the current offering a little limited, the rollout will soon extend to new countries like Mexico, India and the United Arab Emirates.
