Michael J. Fox Comes Out of Retirement on Apple TV+

Michael J. Fox Comes Out of Retirement on Apple TV+

Michael J. Fox ended his career in 2020, after years of limited presence due to his Parkinson's. The actor who played Marty McFly has suffered from this neurodegenerative disease since 1991. While he had lent his voice to a few animated characters over the past five years, his last appearance in front of a camera was in 2020 in the series The Good Fight. In 2023, he was also at the epicenter of a documentary on Apple TV+ and directed by David Guggenheim.

Three years later, Apple TV+ has clearly found the arguments to convince him to return in front of the camera, this time for fiction. The platform has just announced that he will be in the cast of season 3 of Shrinking. This will be an opportunity for him to play opposite another pop culture legend: Harrison Ford.

As a reminder, the actor who played Indiana Jones plays a grumpy psychoanalyst who helplessly witnesses his colleague Jimmy's downfall. After the death of his wife, the latter falls into a depression and has difficulty getting his head above water and dealing with his job and his responsibilities as a father. Then he has an idea: what if he went against all ethical rules and told his patients exactly what he thinks? These new methods don't really please Paul, who makes it a point to keep all the necessary distance from his patients.

A major role for Michael J. Fox

For now, it is not known what role has been entrusted to Michael J. Fox. According to information from Deadline, it will not be a brief appearance. His recruitment isn't really a surprise, as he already collaborated with Bill Lawrence's co-creator in the late 90s. It seems that the two men have remained close and that Lawrence probably saw this third season of his comedy as an opportunity to bring him back into action.

While nothing has been confirmed, the actor's career path echoes the story of Harrison Ford's character. In the first season, it was revealed that Paul suffers from Parkinson's disease. Lawrence could be looking to bring fiction and reality together, a new opportunity to discuss his daily struggle. However, we'll have to wait a little while to find out what it's all about. While a little over a year separated the first two seasons, Apple TV+ has not announced the launch date for this new series.
