The Gears of War feature film has been a long time coming, but is taking its time to get things right. Netflix took over the reins of the project in November 2022 and hasn't really given any news since. Until then, the last announcement was on March 22, 2023, when the participation of John Spaihts (Dune / Doctor Strange) as screenwriter was officially revealed. It took two long years for the Red N to speak again. No cancellation in sight: the adaptation project is still underway and has just acquired the talents of a renowned director.
John Spaihts' screenplay will be transcribed to the screen by David Leitch, a filmmaker well-known to action fans of all kinds. With hits like Bullet Train and The Fall Guy to its credit, it's safe to say that Gears of War seems to be in good hands. David Leitch will also be producing the film, along with Kelly McCormick and The Coalition, the development team behind the video game franchise. Unfortunately, further information regarding the production progress or a release window for the feature film has yet to be shared.
What's the storyline for this adaptation?
Unsurprisingly, the storyline for the adaptation also remains one of the great mysteries that Netflix is keeping very close to its chest. To date, no one knows if it's a direct adaptation of one of the games or an original approach, as Prime Video did with its Fallout series. In 2023, the studio The Coalition nevertheless commented on the choice of screenwriter, emphasizing the authenticity of the future film:
“We are thrilled to partner with Jon and the team at Netflix to bring Gears of War to life. John is a master storyteller, gifted at creating epic science fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t dream of a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”“
As a reminder, the first three installments of the video game franchise tell the conflict between Humanity and a genetically modified reptilian race called the Locusts.
