According to insider eXtas1s, Microsoft is preparing to bring Steam to its app store. Testing has reportedly already begun. Here's why it's important for the future of gaming.
It's hard not to find a video game that you want to play. Thousands are released every year on Steam alone, the PC platform on which many gamers have spent far more than they care to admit. The problem arises when you also want to play on console, since there's no direct link between the two yet. There are certainly various cloud gaming systems, but nothing that allows you to simply take a game from your Steam library and launch it on Xbox, for example. This could soon change.
According to eXtas1s, an insider claiming to have recent information, Microsoft is starting tests to integrate Steam into its app store, the Microsoft Store. As the user points out, “this integration will allow users to run Steam more easily and directly from Windows environments and, in the future, from Xbox environments.” He is referring to the future Microsoft home console, expected in 2026 or 2027.
Steam directly in the Microsoft Store? It would be in the testing phase
“The next generation of Xbox will look more like a PC than a console. Everything will be developed around PC environments. The latter logically require Steam integration, which you'll find in your Microsoft Store when you turn on your next-gen Xbox console,” continues eXtas1s. “This will allow you to have Steam on your Xbox console and on any Windows device without the need for complex configurations.”
A sentence that's far from trivial. In short: you'll be able to access all your games purchased on Steam and launch them directly from your Xbox. This isn't the first time we've heard of such a possibility, which is eagerly awaited by gamers. The line between console and PC would blur even further, multiplying the number of titles available. It remains to be seen what this would mean in terms of pricing. If a console can match the gaming experience of a PC by giving it access to a huge library, it will likely command a premium price.
