Mea culpa for Nintendo. It had been announced that the Switch 2 would be compatible with VRR when the console is connected to the TV, but this will ultimately not be the case.
Communication blunder at Nintendo. Several weeks ago, Oliver Mackenzie of Digital Foundry noted that the company had removed mention of the Switch 2's compatibility with VRR (variable refresh rate) technology when docked with a TV. This feature first disappeared from the Nintendo's official websites in the US, Canada, and Japan, and then from its European country pages. For nearly a month, Nintendo remained silent, leaving us to speculate as to whether or not its new console would support VRR on TV. The manufacturer finally deigned to respond to the requests, sending the following statement to Nintendo Life: “The Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. Incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for this.”.
No VRR in TV mode for the Switch 2
So it's official, VRR support will not be provided by the Switch 2 for use in TV mode. When asked about the possibility of this feature coming in a future firmware update, the manufacturer stated that it had "nothing to announce on this subject". Nintendo probably doesn't want to take any more risks by promising this feature when it seems to be struggling to integrate it into its product.
"It could be that they have encountered an issue with the Realtek DisplayPort to HDMI converter in the dock," Oliver Mackenzie predicted when he raised the issue last month. He now adds that Nintendo is using "an older DisplayPort to HDMI chip", which is probably "not natively compatible with the HDMI Forum VRR standard". Nintendo probably wanted to cut costs by equipping the Switch 2 with an older component, and would not have anticipated that it could cause problems for the implementation of VRR.
