Nintendo Switch: This super important update sets the stage for the Switch 2

Just weeks before the highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for June 5th, Nintendo has just released a major update for the original Switch. Indeed, version 20.0.0 brings new features intended for prepare the ground for the transition to the next generation of consoles.

Among the main new features is the "Virtual Game Card" system. It allows users to lend their digital games to other members of their Nintendo Family Group, similar to exchanging a physical cartridge. The process of "loading" and "ejecting" between two consoles gives new flexibility to users, even if a Switch 2 is obviously necessary to initiate the exchange.

Similarly, the “GameShare” function, also introduced in this update, will allow you to share a game locally with another player via a wireless connection, but still subject to having a Switch 2 to start the session. Finally, another notable addition is added to the list. This is the possibility to easily transfer your system settings and data to a Switch 2. Nintendo therefore offers two methods: a classic local transfer or sending to a dedicated server for those who have to part with their current Switch before receiving their new console. However, this option will reset the Switch to zero, requiring users to plan their migration carefully.

An update for later

As you will have understood, this big update The update is not intended to improve the experience of Switch players, but rather to properly prepare the ground for the release of the Switch 2. It will therefore only be useful in a few weeks. However, other changes are planned, although they are rather minor. In addition to these useful features, the update The update offers some aesthetic adjustments, including reworked colors for the Nintendo eShop and News app icons, as well as slight changes to standard user profiles.

However, not everything is rosy in the world of the Switch 2. Indeed, a growing controversy surrounds the announced launch price. The console will be sold at 470 euros, a price significantly higher than that of the first Switch at its release. This positioning has caused some teeth to grind within the community, with some players believing that the increase is difficult to justify, despite the promised improvements. It remains to be seen whether this will affect first-year sales
