One UI 7: Samsung Galaxy phones heat up and their battery dies after the update

Samsung's update rollout is anything but smooth, and One UI 7 confirms this. The new interface, based on Android 15, appears to be causing battery issues for many users. According to several reports collected on Samsung's official forums and platforms like Reddit, users of the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, S23 Ultra, as well as the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 are noticing a significant drop in battery life since installing the update.

A Galaxy S23 Ultra user reports that battery usage has increased significantly after installing One UI 7. On Reddit, a Galaxy S23 owner explains that his battery "drains very quickly". Another S23 user even reports having to charge their device multiple times a day, even for limited use to Reddit and YouTube.

Even newer Galaxy phones are also affected, as evidenced by this Galaxy Z Fold 6 owner who claims to end their days with barely 20 to 25% battery, compared to nearly 50% before the update. This observation is far from isolated and is widely shared, particularly by Galaxy S24 users. Some also note a more noticeable heating than before, which can harm the user experience.

Faced with these complaints, it is worth remembering that major Android updates or important firmware updates can have a temporary impact on the battery life of smartphones. The operating system resets its personalized battery optimizations based on usage habits, and it takes some time for it to relearn and adapt again. This background optimization process can take several days.

However, the problem seems to persist for many users beyond this period.

A temporary battery problem?

Specialist site SamMobile notes that not all users are affected and that some people report not noticing any problems, even mentioning slightly better battery life than with the previous version, One UI 6. These divergent user reports suggest that this may not be a widespread issue inherently affecting all devices.

Remember that One UI 7 is a major update that brings many new features. Although there was an extended beta testing program, it's possible that some bugs escaped Samsung's testing. In fact, the One UI 7 rollout was initially halted due to a bug.

While waiting for an official fix, users are sharing various temporary solutions with varying degrees of effectiveness. These include clearing the system cache from recovery mode or simply waiting for the system to finish optimizing. A more radical method suggests performing a full reset of the phone. This more restrictive and laborious procedure seems to have worked for some users, allowing them to regain more decent battery life.

It's likely Samsung is working behind the scenes to identify and fix these battery life issues. A fix could be rolled out in a future update, potentially as early as the May 2025 update, which would aim to further stabilize One UI 7 and address these power-hungry issues affecting the brand's high-end devices.
