Starting next week, the Nintendo Switch will finally be able to take a well-deserved retirement, making way for its successor console. The Nintendo Switch 2 has been a long time coming, but the final stretch before the machine's launch seems to have flown by. We're only a few days away from the promising Mario Kart World and improvements to Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom: but be careful not to get carried away with impatience. Indeed, the transition from the Switch to the Switch 2 will require some preparation to avoid certain disasters, particularly when it comes to backups.
If you're a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber, you should still avoid relying on the cloud backup feature. In addition to preventing the loss of crucial data in the event of a console failure, this benefit makes it easy to download game saves to a new Nintendo Switch system. Those familiar with this feature will therefore be tempted to do the same to facilitate their transition to the Nintendo Switch 2, but it is not a miracle solution: far from it!
Some franchises that are very popular with players are deprived of this privilege in order to avoid the risk of cheating. This is particularly the case for saves from the games Pokémon and Splatoon, as well as Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you are planning to sell your current console to finance the purchase of the Nintendo Switch 2, there is only one way to preserve all of your saves. To do this, you must use the new transfer feature dedicated to the launch of the new console... but what does it consist of?
An imperative transfer to Nintendo's servers
The Kyoto company has planned everything to facilitate the transition to the new console, but some players do not seem to be aware of it yet. It must be said that the new option is well hidden in the Nintendo Switch settings, so be careful not to miss it. Especially since it has a significant advantage, since it is possible to transfer data even before getting your hands on the Switch 2. There is therefore no need to keep your original console, which you can sell now or on the day of sale, whichever you prefer.
To do this, simply go to the system settings of your current Switch and select “Transfer data to Nintendo Switch 2”. The “I don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet” option allows you to send all of your data: namely games, saves, including saves that are usually incompatible with the cloud, screenshots and system settings. And there you have it, your Pokémon, your Animal Crossing island, and your Splatoon stats are all safe and ready to be reinstalled!
But be careful:
Once you do this, the original console will be reset, and your data will be unrecoverable until you have a Nintendo Switch 2 to download it. This transfer to Nintendo's servers will be kept for one year, so only do this closer to your purchase!
