Slipping geeky references into outfits isn't always easy, especially when you want to maintain a minimum of sobriety. Pop culture merchandise has the unfortunate tendency to feature prints that are too bright or overwhelming, making it difficult to wear these clothes on every occasion. But some brands are beginning to understand that the best designs of the genre are those that blend in with current fashion.
After Celio's numerous Pokémon collections—which don't always apply this rule of discretion perfectly—it's now UNIQLO's turn to welcome the little pocket monsters onto t-shirts and hoodies that we actually want to wear.
A first wave of designs in the brand's graphic UT collection recently appeared in French stores, but has already fallen victim to its own success. Don't panic though: these Pokémon Sketch t-shirts will be reissued at the end of May alongside additional prints, including those featuring Psyduck and Greninja.
However, fans of the trading card game and the Pokémon TCG Pocket app will probably prefer to wait for the arrival of the UNIQLO UT Pokémon TCG collection, just announced by the ready-to-wear brand and The Pokémon Company.
A collaboration worth a look
The Celio clothing collection dedicated to Pokémon cards offered some very effective pieces (the energy socks for example), but also proved to us that printing certain cards on clothing can quickly become bad taste (yes, we're talking about you, Charizard-ex hoodie). UNIQLO also falls into this trap with some products from its new UT collection, but also offers other alternatives that promise to sell like hotcakes.
The Amonita and Slowpoke t-shirts, as well as the hoodies featuring the immersive Mewtwo-ex card or the alternative design of Gengar-ex (two cards from the Genetic Power expansion of Pokémon TCG Pocket) are making a splash. The same goes for the Unown sweatshirt, which almost makes us want to watch the movie Pokémon 2: The Power of You again.
For now, this UT Pokémon TCG collection has only been announced for the Japanese market, with a launch scheduled for mid-August. However, given the With the ever-growing popularity of the famous cards, UNIQLO and The Pokémon Company would be wrong to reserve these clothes for Japanese brands. So, even if it's a safe bet that this range will arrive here in the coming months, we'll have to wait for an official announcement from the brand to be sure.
