Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot gets some updates

Since the reboot craze shows no sign of slowing down, some studios are no longer hesitant to tackle pop culture landmarks that were once thought to be untouchable. And Disney intends to lead the way. While its streaming platform Hulu – whose content is included on Disney+ in France – has just officially announced the development of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, the company with the big ears is working in the shadows on another major project. Rumors about an X-Files reboot have been circulating since 2021 and were confirmed two years ago.

The first rumors date back to the signing of a five-year contract between Disney and the production company Proximity, owned by Ryan Coogler. The entertainment giant hired the director of Black Panther and Sinners to produce television content, a connection then attributed to the development of the famous reboot. It wasn't until Chris Carter, the creator of the original series, spoke during an interview with Premiere in 2023 that the first details of this reinvention became concrete. And while he isn't part of the project (other than in a supporting capacity), Carter stated in 2024 that Ryan Coogler had "some good ideas."

Since then, the project has been very quiet, but the director of the reboot is finally breaking his silence. It was during an appearance on the show Last Podcast On The Left that Ryan Coogler made the production launch official, while making a nice promise to future viewers: I’m currently working on The X-Files. That’s what’s next on my list. I’ve been excited about this project for a long time now, and I can’t wait to get back to it. And to be honest, if we do our job right, some episodes will be really scary.“. With production still in its infancy, we’ll probably have to wait a few more years before seeing it arrive on Disney’s streaming service.

Dana Scully back for this new adventure?

The reboot of The X-Files is keeping its secrets, but a few details regarding the series’ casting have been discussed in the past. In 2023, Chris Carter stated that this version directed by Ryan Coogler would benefit from a “more diverse cast.” But this new vision will certainly not prevent familiar faces from making a comeback on screen. Last year, Gillian Anderson – who played Agent Dana Scully in the original series – was very enthusiastic about the reboot project.

Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther – who is a truly brilliant director – contacted Chris Carter to say he wanted to take over the series, and I can’t think of a better person to direct a reboot,” the actress told the Today Show.Whether I’m in it, that’s a whole other question. I’m not saying no. Maybe I’ll be a little something,” she said, hinting that her possible presence would be limited to a cameo.
