Even before taking the helm of the DC Universe in cinema, James Gunn explored the franchise on the small screen with Peacemaker. A spin-off of his Suicide Squad, the series aimed to shed light on the astonishing character played by John Cena. Broadcast in 2022 on Max and a few months later in France via Prime Video, the comedy found its audience and distinguished itself among the best of the superheroes of the stable, between parody and edgy spy thriller.
The story immortalized him as he was recruited to carry out a new mission with a new team. Without knowing it, Christopher Smith embarks on a story that is bigger than him. The series finale suggested that it wasn't over for this group of misfits. Leota, Economos, Vigilante, and Emilia were promised new adventures after crossing paths with the Justice League (old generation). But the public had to be patient, as very few images were shared. Aside from a very short sequence in the trailer for Max in 2025, the content of this season remained a mystery. The wait is coming to an end with the release of the first real images. Since taking control of the franchise, with Peter Safran, James Gunn has delivered other series projects for Max. With the animated series Creature Commandos, which aired last December, he formed a new team of unusual beings. A name familiar to the audience made a comeback: Rick Flag.
Here, it wasn't a question of evoking the character played by Joel Kinnaman, but rather his father played by Frank Grillo. We can see him in the first images, desperate to get his hands on Peacemaker and his cronies.
We'll probably have to wait a little while to learn more, and to be treated to a proper trailer and a synopsis, but we can't wait to see the hero again. The good news is that the wait won't be very long, since the date is already set for August 21st on Max.... enough to end the summer in style.
Note that the series will be released after Superman by James Gunn and that it will be an opportunity to discover how the series, which straddles two universes, fits into this new version.
