Samsung recently launched its first ultra-thin smartphone, the Galaxy S25 Edge, which we were able to get our hands on. While we haven't been able to test it yet, one of the points we'll be paying particular attention to is undoubtedly the smartphone's battery life, which we'll be testing using our 01lab protocol.
Why is battery life more of an issue than on other phones? Because an ultra-thin smartphone necessarily means less space for components. The component that undoubtedly takes up the most space in these little beasts is the battery. The result is a 5.8 mm Galaxy S25 Edge with a 3900 mAh battery. This is while the standard has been pushing between 4000 and 6000 mAh in recent years.
Towards a 2800 mAh battery?
While the Galaxy S25 Edge's battery may seem a little small, the iPhone 17 Air could go even further. As a reminder, Apple is reportedly planning to integrate this ultra-thin smartphone into its range to replace the iPhone 16 Plus. Again, this project raises concerns about the battery life to be expected from such a smartphone, which is expected to measure around 5.5 mm.
For the first time, we have a preliminary idea of its battery capacity. The information comes from a source that has already proven itself, but is relatively inactive, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. According to this source, the iPhone 17 Air would have a 2800 mAh battery. This would simply be the lowest capacity on the market.
Why is it less serious for an iPhone?
Be careful, however, iPhones have regularly occupied the top spot for the longest-lasting smartphones with much smaller batteries than all their competitors. This is Apple's advantage here, as it controls almost all of the smartphone's components and can optimize the system as desired, since the company also controls the operating system of its smartphones, iOS.
Still, even with full optimization, with such a low capacity, it would be very surprising to see the iPhone 17 Air achieve such impressive battery life. If it manages to last the day without too much stress, that would already be a good point in its favor. Otherwise, you might want to consider a case with an integrated battery, since this is also part of the rumors circulating around the ultra-thin phone.
