This Sunday, season 2 of The Last of Us concluded with the broadcast of its seventh and final episode: "Convergence." In fact, all eyes are now already on season 3, the production of which is not expected to begin before 2026. And if we know that this season, like the plan of The Last of Us Part 2, will now focus on Abby's story, this does not prevent some from asking a big question: will we have the opportunity to see Pedro Pascal, aka Joel, again in the future?
A potential return of Joel in The Last of Us?
Indeed, if Joel should normally no longer appear for more than obvious reasons, there are still a great many fans who hope that the character's past will one day be evoked through a series of new flashbacks. After all, although mentioned several times in both seasons, his past as a smuggler is never really shown. There would therefore be a lot of material to be done, especially in the twenty years that pass between the introduction of the pilot episode and the continuation of the series.
Unfortunately, as revealed by ScreenRant, Neil Druckmann assured during a press conference organized for the finale of season 2 that nothing was planned on this subject in the immediate future. Nor was any return of Joel to the universe of The Last of Us, for that matter. However, like his numerous comments concerning a potential The Last of Us Part 3, the creator of the franchise does not completely close the door to such a possibility.
"I think that... It's always a good thing to leave an element of mystery, to let the audience use their imagination to fill in the blanks. Obviously, from time to time, we draw on these mysteries when they are important to the story we are telling. So, I guess you should never say never..."

A surprise comes so quickly
These words were then supported by Craig Mazin, director of the series, who added that the events of season 2 of The Last of Us would have made the integration of such a plot particularly difficult. But as he goes on to clarify: "But I think next season we'll probably have more flexibility. And you know, we love a little side trip to Indonesia, it's one of our favorite things to do, so maybe—maybe a trip, you know, with Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we'll never know."
A rather surprising statement, let's not kid ourselves, which nevertheless pushes Druckmann to add: "Look, I never thought we'd do a little story about Joel's dad before we wrote the season, so there you go. You can't predict that kind of thing." In short, nothing is impossible, then. But if it does happen, it's a safe bet that it won't happen before a potential season 4. Because as it stands, Joel's presence wouldn't really make sense or be relevant in the context of season 3.
