The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7: 3 Major Differences Between the Series and the Game

For this final episode of season 2 of The Last of Us, HBO has once again taken some liberties with the video game that was named Game of the Year in 2020.

The Last of Us season 2 is over

With the release of episode 7, season 2 of The Last of Us is drawing to a close. Has Ellie finally found Abby? After a "flashback" episode, HBO was supposed to pick up where it left off and bring Ellie's hunt to a climactic close. So it's the teenager's third day in Seattle, marked in Naughty Dog's game by the discovery of the aquarium during the storm, then Abby's bursting into the theater to avenge herself a second time for the loss of her loved ones. Overall, HBO has chosen to remain faithful to the game regarding the narrative framework (the journey to the aquarium, or the theater sequence filmed in the same way as the cutscene). But as with every segment of the plot, the production allows for some deviations from the source material. He accompanies Ellie to track down Tommy, before the duo is interrupted by a radio signal talking about a sniper who is up to no good at the Marina. An aggressive exchange then begins, centered on selfishness and hypocrisy. Jesse accuses her friend of only thinking about herself and getting revenge on Joel, when Ellie calls him a hypocrite. A scene that serves to bring back to the fore Ellie's almost obsessive quest, ready to sacrifice everything for revenge, and thus gives Jesse more weight. Indeed, he has just learned that he is the father (of the child Dina is carrying in her womb) and intends to survive to raise him.

Poll: Do you want a season 4 of The Last of Us?

Earlier in the episode, Ellie decided to talk to Jesse about her relationship with Dina. The two manage to verbalize their feelings. A slight moment of calm before the aquarium sequence and the final scene that serves as a cliffhanger for the season. A way to make the loss of Jesse more heartbreaking for fans, since by opening up to Ellie, he makes himself more endearing to the viewers. His moral choices are very fair compared to those of his friend, who can be, on the contrary, annoying at times. A departure with the tributes. At Naughty Dog, dialogue scenes are much less emphasized. Jesse is a rather bland secondary character who serves as an ally to the player during their trips to Seattle.

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7: 3 Major Differences Between the Series and the Game

#2 The Seraphite island and village revealed very early

While she manages to find a motorboat to reach the other side of the shore (where the aquarium is located), Ellie is caught in the storm and ends up on an island, which is clearly the Seraphite stronghold. Captured by the Scars, she nearly gets gutted when an alert sounds, signifying the village's attack.

HBO chooses to reveal the village's location much earlier than in the game. Even if it isn't physically shown, it foreshadows the WLF attack that Abby will face in the game. In The Last of Us Part II, she tries to help young Lev who sees his village in flames after Isaac Dixon's troops land. Now that HBO has talked about the Seraphite stronghold, the series will likely take more liberty in depicting it in Season 3, which will therefore adapt the same three days spent by Ellie in Seattle, this time through Abby's eyes. We also remind you that a season 4 will most likely see the light of day.

#1 The meeting with Owen and Mel

The murder of Owen and Mel is certainly the biggest change in the episode. As she infiltrates the aquarium and points her gun at Abby's two friends, Owen tries to grab his own to shoot first. But Ellie is faster and pulls the trigger twice. The first one lodges in Owen's throat, and the second accidentally hits Mel, a collateral victim. She still manages to confess that she's pregnant and begs her to deliver her baby before it's too late. Unfortunately, Ellie doesn't succeed.

A sequence invented by the production to accentuate Ellie's cruelty and emphasize her guilt. In the game, Ellie eliminates Mel in a survival reflex when she tries to stab her. When she discovers she's pregnant, Mel is already dead. Just like Nora earlier in the series, Ellie continues to eliminate the members responsible for Joel's murder while facing the consequences of her actions.
