The iPhone 17 lineup, scheduled for this fall, should mark the start of a profound design change for Apple smartphones. Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, who sometimes has good sources, speaks of a three-phase "tiering" of this initiative that will take us until 2027, in other words, the 20th anniversary of the iPhone.
A truly all-screen iPhone
The first step is therefore this year. The iPhone 17 Air and Pro should thus introduce a completely different camera block on the back. The current "hump" could thus give way to a strip that, like the latest Pixels, will occupy the entire width of the smartphone.
In 2026, Apple should turn its attention to the front of the devices. The Dynamic Island, unveiled with the iPhone 14 Pro, would bow out. This "pill" currently hides the sensors needed for Face ID and the FaceTime camera on the front. A punch-hole should appear instead, for the selfie camera sensor. The components for the biometric recognition system would be placed under the screen, thus completely invisible.
Finally, in 2027 for the iPhone 19 (but perhaps Apple will want to change its name?), the screen would be immaculate, without a punch-hole, cutout, or notch of any kind. A truly "all-screen" smartphone that will mark the end of one design and the beginning of another. The iPhone's 20th anniversary is likely to be rich in new features, as we're also expecting the first foldable iPhone.
