Tesla's high-end sedans are once again attracting attention. Camouflaged prototypes have been spotted with some visible new features. An expected change, but one that could disappoint due to its discretion.
For the past two years, Tesla has been multiplying the redesigns of its most popular models. The Model 3 underwent a complete restyling in 2024, followed by the new Model Y launched in early 2025, with a completely revised design, improved comfort, and increased range. These changes reflect the brand's clear desire to modernize its range to remain competitive. In this dynamic, the highest-end models, the Model S and the Model X, are also preparing to evolve.
Long considered Tesla's technological showcases, the Model S and Model X have changed little in recent years. Their last restyling dates back to 2021, and since then, interest in these models has significantly declined. Sales are in free fall, with fewer than 50,000 units sold worldwide in 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, the manufacturer even grouped them in the “other models” category, alongside the Cybertruck and the Semi. However, camouflaged prototypes of these models have been spotted recently, hinting at a new update planned for the end of the year.
Tesla adds a front-facing camera and revises the interior lighting of the Model S and X
The new images show lightly camouflaged prototypes driving around the San Francisco Bay Area. These vehicles feature minor but significant visual changes. The most visible change is the addition of a camera on the front bumper. This could improve the detection of features located very low on the road, such as debris, holes, or curbs that are not detected by the side or top cameras. Until now, some areas remained partially covered by the Tesla vision system, which could limit precision in certain maneuvers.
Other clues present on the prototypes suggest minor but notable aesthetic changes. Blue adhesive tape visible on certain interior surfaces suggests that Tesla is integrating light strips into the cabin, as has already been done on the Model 3 and Model Y. These RGB lighting elements provide a more customizable visual ambience, without impacting the driving experience.
On the exterior side, slight modifications are visible at the front and rear, particularly on the diffuser and bumper. A camouflaged Model S Plaid prototype was also spotted at the Nürburgring, indicating that Tesla could also be testing possible aerodynamic tweaks. For now, everything seems to point to an aesthetic update rather than a major change.
Looks like there are a lot of little changes coming to Tesla vehicles in the very near future 👀 pic.twitter.com/1vAASUKbr9
