Thunderbolts* was released in theaters last week. Most fans were able to watch it and even enjoy the final film in Phase 5 of the MCU. However, after only a few days of release, Marvel decided to change the film's title, which annoys fans, especially those who haven't seen it yet.
Thunderbolts*: Marvel finds success again
Few people thought the skin of Thunderbolts* would be much, given the latest Marvel productions. Captain America: Brave New World notably received poor reviews, and seeing a feature film that would focus on a team of "supporting actors" foreshadowed the same fate. However, Thunderbolts* surprised audiences.
With his team of former villains, Jake Schreier knew how to touch people's hearts through a story dealing with mental health. Thunderbolts* makes wonderful use of Sentry to offer a psychological fight over the physical one. This makes these villains in search of redemption particularly endearing to us, who resemble us more than some superheroes. On the other hand, it's important to point out that the film's success is also due to Marvel's marketing, even if it made a mistake regarding a character's fate, and probably an even bigger one.
Marvel Changes the Title of Thunderbolts*
The asterisk in the title intrigued many people. The end of the film provided a definitive answer to this question. While only those who had seen it knew it, Marvel has now revealed its meaning to everyone. Indeed, the studio has begun changing the film's title on billboards, changing it from Thunderbolts to The New Avengers.
Marketing genius or a big mistake by Marvel? Well, it's hard to say. It's clear that the name "Avengers" sells better and can intrigue the most reluctant. It could even be said that it makes sense, just as Star Wars changed its name in 1981 to Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. However, the timing is strange, to say the least. Making this change the same week as the film's release isn't very smart. It irreparably spoils the surprise for viewers who haven't seen it yet and may even cause confusion. We'll have to see if the change will bear fruit, especially at the box office, because only it will provide a definitive answer to this question.
