Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the game of the moment. Sandfall Interactive's gem is making the rounds in the media, particularly through Guillaume Broche, its director. In one of the many articles dedicated to the game, he discussed the game's genesis by evoking his career, while also taking a little dig at Ubisoft.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33: A French Pride
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a true phenomenon. The game from Montpellier-based studio Sandfall Interactive is a success with both critics and the public. Beyond its gaming qualities, it has shaken up the industry. With its small team, its pressure-free development time, and its ultra-attractive price, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has seriously kicked things into gear.
The video game industry has recently been the subject of a lot of negative talk, particularly with the Nintendo Switch 2 and its Mario Kart World, which sells for 90 euros. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has arrived at the right time to do good for players. It's a game by enthusiasts, made for enthusiasts. With the postponement of GTA 6 to next year, some are even dreaming of seeing it win the GOTY title, which would send another strong message to the industry. In any case, Guillaume Broche has already sent one to Ubisoft recently.
The director of Sandfall Interactive takes a dig at Ubisoft
During his media tour, Guillaume Broche stopped by the BBC for an exclusive interview dedicated to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He notably discusses the game's success, but above all talks about its development. The story began in 2020, a time when, as he says, people were "bored in their jobs" and wanted to "do something different". At the time, he was working at Ubisoft, and it was while wanting to develop Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that he left the studio to found Sandfall Interactive.
Ubisoft will appreciate this little dig, even if it's not malicious, far from it. If Guillaume Broche left the studio, it was above all due to creative differences and a desire to free himself from a system that didn't allow him to realize his dreams. You only have to look at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to understand: it's a game in the direct lineage of JRPGs like Final Fantasy. Compared to Ubisoft's productions, it's clear that it's not the same thing. Taking the example of Assassin's Creed, whose formula is widely reused, including in Shadows, we understand what might have tired Guillaume Broche. Ultimately, history proved him right, since Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is already one of the best games of the year.
