After auditioning for these two Marvel films, Lewis Pullman, the star of Thunderbolts*, landed a major role in the MCU as Sentry / The Void. This character, one-part superhero, one-part villain, and one-part human (hello Bob), captivated audiences. And this won't be his last appearance! Paul Jenkins, its creator, teases the possible appearance of a terrifying power in the future...
Sentry / The Void, a tortured character
First appearing in the pages of Marvel comics in 2000, Sentry is a fascinating character. Created by Paul Jenkins, Robert Reynolds, a.k.a. Bob in the MCU, is just another guy... Except he has two alter-egos, a superhero and a villain, The Void. This duality is what makes him so interesting, and as his creator told our colleagues at CBR, the glimpse we got of his powers in Thunderbolts* is just the beginning.
I always try to explain to people that when you write a villain, you can agree with the villain—and that happens a lot. But you can disagree with their methods. As they say, the villain believes his own story. He thinks he's the hero. And in the Sentry's case, I presented him as someone capable of an ultimate act of heroism: giving up his heroism to save the world. It's a great act of compassion. Because he's addicted. He WANTS to be the Sentry. He's a powerful superhero, but he knows that the existence of the Sentry and The Void creates this thing. So he just becomes Bob again.
This terrifying power soon in the MCU?
Contrary to what you might think, you only got a brief glimpse of his powers in Thunderbolts*. Paul Jenkins explains that another of his unusual abilities, left out by Marvel for the film, could see the light of day on screen in the future.
The imbalance of power is such that Bob will always have to fight: "If I become the Sentry, I will inevitably become The Void." And then I wrote an idea that wasn't really touched on [in the film], but that we might do someday. If the Sentry saves a plane from crashing and there are 137 people on board, then The Void will kill 137 people in a mine shaft collapse, or something like that. There's kind of a balancing act. So Bob knows that, no matter what, if he saves people, more people will die.
Who knows, maybe that rumor about a Sentry movie from 2022 will turn out to be true in the future...
