As we slowly but surely approach Tomb Raider's thirtieth anniversary, projects centering on Miss Croft's adventures are multiplying. After two rounds of remasters, the first season of an animated series, and numerous crossover appearances in other games, the Crystal Dynamics heroine is preparing her return with a highly anticipated new installment and a live-action series from Prime Video. An adaptation that, contrary to recent rumors, still seems to be on the cards.
No, Amazon's Tomb Raider series is not canceled
Indeed, given the silence surrounding this project entrusted to director Phoebe Waller-Bridge, rumors of a possible cancellation of the Tomb Raider series have begun to emerge in recent weeks. But fans can rest assured: this is actually not the case! As Variety recently revealed exclusively, it appears that Story Kitchen (formerly dj2 Entertainment) has renewed its rights with Amazon MGM Studios to produce the series.
“We are thrilled to continue our incredible journey with our friends, fellow gamers, and partners at Amazon MGM Studios,” said Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson on the occasion. “We look forward to continuing our collective goal of telling great stories based on best-in-class games.” This definitely puts an end to the rumors of a potential cancellation, even if we are not really any further ahead on the status of the project at the moment.
The potential future Lara Croft in very good shape?
It would nevertheless seem that the first clues are slowly but surely starting to emerge, particularly concerning the actress likely to play Lara Croft in the series. Indeed, it's been a while now that rumors have been circulating that the role would have been given to British actress Sophie Turner, notably known for her roles as Jean Grey in the X-Men films and Sansa Stark in the series Game of Thrones. And while this is not yet official, a new photo is sure to set the powder keg alight.
Shared by the actress before being quickly deleted, it shows Turner in Olympic form, all built up with muscles around a swimming pool. But as always with the internet, nothing really disappears. And it didn't take long for Tomb Raider fans to reshare the photo en masse, theorizing that it was the result of her training for the role. Because Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander can attest to this: playing Lara Croft requires a very intensive sports program.
And it's not the tweet from Daniel Richtman, a renowned insider in the film industry, that will push fans to think otherwise. "I heard it's not canceled and I'm excited," he declared on X, re-sharing a tweet contrasting the actress's photo with that of the Tomb Raider heroine. But let's just reiterate if necessary: know that none of this is official. At the time of writing, the identity of the actress who will play Lara Croft in the Amazon series has still not been confirmed. So, take it with a grain of salt.
