Top Gun: By the way, where is the third movie?

Top Gun: By the way, where is the third movie?

He's definitely not ready to retire. While bidding farewell to Ethan Hunt after eight Mission: Impossible films, Tom Cruise made his return to the Top Gun saga in 2022. 36 years after his first appearance as Pete Maverick, the American actor reconnected with the universe born under the impetus of Tony Scott in 1986. A rebirth as unexpected as it was appreciated by audiences around the world. At a time when theaters were still rather complicated, Top Gun: Maverick had a thunderous launch in the middle of summer. It ended its run with $1.4 million collected, a godsend in times of pandemic. It didn't take long for Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the saga, to officially announce the start of work on a sequel.

For two years, however, Cruise seemed busy with other projects and unwilling to work on the return of Pete Maverick. In the midst of the promotional campaign for The Final Reckoning, director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie finally gives an update on the project. If the rerun of Maverick made you want to see more (again), you clearly won't have to wait as long as expected. The writer of Top Gun: Maverick, who works closely with Ehren Kruger, explains that he has found a way to continue. He adds that the deal is "in the bag" and that he already knows what the film will be about. But when? Despite his enthusiasm, McQuarrie doesn't go so far as to give a timeline for filming or release. The director simply mentions the third film as one of the priorities for Paramount Pictures, Tom Cruise, and himself. It's not even the only project currently occupying his mind, since he's working on a film continuing the plot of Tony Scott's 1990 film Days of Thunder. In both cases, he is not expected to be involved in directing.

For Top Gun 3, Joseph Kosinski should be tapped, having surpassed himself with Maverick and its high-flying aerial scenes. For his part, Cruise is associated with multiple projects, including a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow — little is known about it — and a space film that should mark the history of the 7th art and humanity by being the first feature film shot outside our atmosphere. It remains to be seen whether, apart from Cruise, other actors will return, such as Miles Teller, Glen Powell or Lewis Pullman.
