Twitter Becomes X: Is Elon Musk Heading for Platform Failure?

Twitter Becomes X: Is Elon Musk Heading for Platform Failure?

While it may seem like a long time ago to some, it's actually only been two years since Elon Musk announced the name change from Twitter to X. Much criticized at the time, the billionaire announced that he had made this decision to make significant changes to his application.

While he had held the domain name x.com for nearly 20 years, was this rebranding a success or a failure? Let's take a closer look at the situation today...

A name change that's difficult for users to follow...

Are you torn between Twitter and X? Don't worry, you're clearly not alone! Indeed, according to a Sherwood report this Wednesday, confusion is still present among some users.

To assess the phenomenon, the company focused in particular on searches for "twitter login" and "x login" using the Google Trends tool. Looking very closely at the searches, Sherwood shows that, almost two years later, the search for logging into X has just surpassed that for logging into Twitter.

A “super app” project that fell into oblivion?

By making this transition from Twitter to X, As early as October 2022, Elon Musk had the ambition to develop a "super app". Although this concept is still little known in Europe and the Americas, it is very popular in Asia thanks to the WeChat application.

Concretely, this aims to use a single application to get information, communicate with loved ones, and even make purchases. Unfortunately, almost two years later, the project that Elon Musk was so keen on does not seem to have moved forward.

Even more worrying, the owner of the social network is no longer communicating at all on this subject, while the project is still relevant according to Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X.

600 million active users in 2025, where are we now?

In 2022, Twitter had 217 million daily users. At the same time, the New York Times revealed Elon Musk's goals, with the aim of growing Twitter to 600 million monthly active users by 2025, and even up to 931 million by 2028.

While the previous figures reported daily users, X has theoretically increased its user count, but the company has not released any specific figures.

Moreover, this should be put in perspective with other recent statistics on the social network. According to SEMRush analytics tool on X's website, the website is experiencing less traffic, and the same is true for app X, which is being downloaded less than before.

After almost two years of change, we can only see that Elon Musk's promises have not yet been kept... yet?
