Launched a little while ago now, the PS Portal is gradually establishing itself as an unexpected success for Sony. In its latest strategic report addressed to investors, the Japanese firm highlights the performance of the device, and seems determined to offer it a more ambitious future. This highlighting raises another question, what if Sony is preparing the ground for a true next-generation portable console, like a PS6 Portable. Especially since rumors are numerous on this subject, as we reported last April.
The PlayStation Portal becoming a priority for Sony, does it smell good for a PS6 Portable?
The PlayStation Portal was not intended to become a flagship product. However, Sony now describes it as a "solid and profitable" product, proof that the concept is more appealing than expected. The arrival of cloud streaming in beta on the device further reinforces its appeal: it's no longer just about playing remotely at home, but anywhere, with a sufficient connection.
This technological development has not gone unnoticed. Because if Sony is now insisting so much on the success of this device, it's probably not by chance. The success of Portal could be the first step towards a true portable PS6.
A bright future
For now, Sony isn't talking about a new portable console per se. But by emphasizing the strong results of Portal, promoting mobile gaming, and investing in cloud gaming, the message is clear: portable gaming is back on the brand's agenda.
And with a new generation of consoles in the works, the rumors surrounding a portable PS6 make perfect sense. It wouldn't necessarily be a return to the PS Vita, but rather a hybrid device, designed to accompany the future PlayStation 6.
A portable PS6 could thus take advantage of the cloud, Remote Play and live service games to offer a complementary experience to the home console. This would be a smart way to adapt to modern uses, without directly competing with the main machine.
