Apart from the Steam Deck, the interface of portable consoles is often questionable, lacking practicality and ergonomics. SteamOS could soon be imposed on all these devices to solve the problem.

What if the biggest problem with handheld consoles was finally fixed?

In recent years, portable consoles have become trendy again. The Switch reminded everyone that this format was still popular with gamers. At the same time, technological progress has been made, notably by AMD, in terms of APU performance, allowing PC games to run natively on this type of machine. These two elements have contributed to this renewed interest from manufacturers and consumers alike.

The gaming experience isn't always perfect, between battery life that can melt like snow in the sun and ergonomics that aren't the most optimal for long, comfortable gaming sessions. But one of the biggest flaws of portable consoles comes from their user interface (UI), which isn't really suited to this type of device. And for good reason, all these products run on Windows.

SteamOS for all portable consoles?

However, Valve had paved the way with its Steam Deck, powered by the SteamOS overlay. The latter is rather pleasant and practical to use, and hides well that in the background, it's good old Windows that is at work. Except that since then, many consoles from other manufacturers have been released, from Asus, MSI, or even Lenovo, and these portable consoles have clearly regressed in terms of interface compared to what the Steam Deck offers, with software overlays that are not always very well thought out or worked.

Lenovo found the solution by integrating SteamOS on its Legion Go S, and other portable consoles that are not designed by Valve could also include this overlay soon. Steam has indeed announced the launch of a SteamOS compatibility program, which will help to see more clearly.

“The SteamOS compatibility system supports any device other than Steam Deck using SteamOS as its operating system,” explains the platform. “We are excited about the arrival of SteamOS on new devices, and we are continuing our efforts to help the public understand how games work on specific devices,” she concludes, leaving little room for doubt about the arrival of SteamOS on future portable consoles.
