WWDC 2025: Will Apple Change Everything?

WWDC 2025: Will Apple Change Everything?

WWDC is Apple's big annual event, which is, of course, first and foremost aimed at developers. But the manufacturer also takes the opportunity to address all users of its devices and services (and future customers!), since it traditionally presents the upcoming new features in the operating systems of the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, HomePod, and the latest addition to the family, the Vision Pro.

A Clean Sweep of the OS

And the 2025 edition will be particularly important. Rumor has it that iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 will benefit this year from a brand new interface inspired by the transparencies and depth effects of VisionOS. The idea is to bring the "experiences" closer together, in other words, to make an iPhone user feel as comfortable on a Mac as on an iPad. The bet is risky, because while these three products share a common DNA, they are not used to do the same things. How can we ensure that each retains its purpose?

And it won't just be a new interface: the way the apps and operating systems themselves work would also be revised. We'll have to lose habits that are several years old (and sometimes even decades old!). User reaction to these changes will be very interesting to follow: when Apple has tried to change things, it has gone rather badly. Attempts to redesign Safari and the Photos app in previous versions of iOS were rejected outright.

Version 3.0 of visionOS should also make a mark. Will this revision of the Vision Pro's OS be able to right the ship for the mixed reality headset? The product is approaching the unenviable status of patent flop.

WWDC, which will kick off with a highly anticipated keynote, will also be a prime opportunity for Apple to set the record straight regarding Siri and Apple Intelligence. It's an understatement to say that the manufacturer has stumbled over its generative AI features: they're far behind the competition. As for Siri, the "personalized" version, which draws on the user's data and apps to provide tailored responses, has been postponed indefinitely. Causing quite a stir behind the scenes.

WWDC will be held mostly virtually and online, as it has been at every event since the pandemic. A developer and guest meet-up day will take place on June 9 at Apple Park in California.
