Xiaomi wants to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek for its device chips. Last November, rumors suggested the manufacturer was developing its own silicon for its smartphones. Lei Jun, the company's CEO, confirmed the leak on Weibo. The first chip to come out of Xiaomi's labs is called Xuanjie O1 in China, and Xring O1 internationally.
Qualcomm still in the race
The official unveiling is expected very soon, before the end of the month. Lei Jun indicated that the O1 chip will power three devices, including the Tablet 7 Ultra. The chip is manufactured using a 3nm node, making it a high-end chip. "We also want to become one of the leading chip manufacturers, with our phones targeting iPhones. Can our chips also be compared to Apple's?" he asks, feigning modesty.
The CEO cautiously admitted, however, that this first generation of Xring will not reach the level of Apple's latest chips in terms of clock frequency, for example. Nevertheless, the O1 is only a first step; there is no doubt that Xiaomi is already preparing new, more powerful models.
While the manufacturer is developing its own chips, this does not mean that they will immediately equip all its products. Xiaomi still needs its partners, first and foremost Qualcomm. The two companies announced two days ago an extension of their 15-year collaboration.
Under this new multi-year agreement, Xiaomi will equip its high-end smartphones with Snapdragon 8 processors. Qualcomm is also expected to present the new generation of its chips at the end of September, and Xiaomi will certainly be there.
