Xiaomi YU7: the electric SUV that wants to shake up Tesla

A few hours ago, Xiaomi unveiled the YU7, its new luxury SUV with impressive performance, designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y in the Chinese market.

A supercar?

Under the hood, the YU7 impresses with its dual engine, combining a 220 kW front motor with a 288 kW rear motor, for a combined power of 681 horsepower. Enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds, a performance worthy of a supercar, and reach a top speed of 253 km/h. This responsive temperament is based on a 101.7 kWh CATL NMC battery (or a 96.3 kWh LFP version from FinDreams), allowing an impressive range of up to 835 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle.

Thanks to an ultra-fast 800 V charging architecture, it can recover 620 km of range in just 15 minutes! A performance that directly addresses the criticism often made against electric SUVs: long journeys and express charging are finally compatible.

The Xiaomi YU7 is based on the Modena platform and takes the stylistic DNA of the SU7, while adopting the codes of a sports SUV. Almost 5 meters long (4.999 m), 1.996 m wide and 1.6 m high, it is distinguished by its generous 3-meter wheelbase and clean lines that give it a dynamic and muscular look. Nine colors will be available at launch, including an intense green inspired by Colombian emeralds and a vibrant metallic orange.

The HyperOS ecosystem at the heart of the car

On board, Xiaomi has focused on the user experience with a cockpit driven by the HyperOS ecosystem, an in-house system that unifies navigation, connectivity, vehicle settings and infotainment. The YU7 features a head-up display called “HyperVision,” an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with a “Boost Mode” button dedicated to powerful acceleration, and a central screen that extends widely across the dashboard. The emphasis is on comfort and ergonomics, with premium seats, intelligent ambient lighting, and a fluid interface.

On the autonomous driving side, the YU7 is not to be outdone, it integrates a complete pack of driving aids, with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, 360° camera, and autonomous parking. Xiaomi says it wants to eventually offer level 3 assisted driving, with OTA updates to constantly improve features.

The YU7 is scheduled to go on sale in July 2025 in China. While no date has yet been announced for a possible European version, Xiaomi has already hinted at its intention to export its vehicles internationally from 2027. This model could therefore be one of the spearheads of this global strategy.

With the YU7, Xiaomi confirms its ambition to become much more than a manufacturer of smartphones or connected objects. This electric SUV, as fast as it is elegant, offers a credible alternative to the most popular models on the market. It remains to be seen whether the brand will be able to convert the test in terms of reliability, sales network and after-sales service, areas where the historical giants still have a head start.
