Microsoft continues to improve its built-in assistant in Windows 11. A new option lets you launch Copilot simply by speaking. This voice command works without contact and reinforces the hands-free use of AI.
Since the arrival of Copilot in the 23H2 update of Windows 11, Microsoft has been seeking to strengthen its presence in the system. In 2023, an option was tested to launch the AI assistant automatically as soon as the PC starts up. The goal is clear: to make it a central tool in everyday use. Text summarization, email generation, office assistance, or voice commands, everything goes through it. And today, a new step has been taken with its voice activation.
Users registered in the Windows Insider program can now trigger the AI by saying “Hey Copilot”. This program gives early access to new Windows features before their official release. Simply go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, then choose a test channel. Once registered, you can test this new feature, provided your PC is unlocked and the option is enabled. This is very practical because this new mode allows you to launch Copilot hands-free on a machine running Windows 11.

Voice activation is completely optional. Microsoft specifies that it is disabled by default to avoid unwanted listening. To activate it, here are the steps to follow:
- Open the Copilot application.
- Click on your avatar in the bottom left.
- Access Settings.
- Scroll down to Voice mode.
- Activate “Listen for ‘Hey Copilot’ to start a conversation”.
The keyword is detected locally, without sending voice data to the servers. As soon as it is recognized, a sound or a message is displayed, and the Copilot Voice interface appears at the bottom of the screen. The user can then interact with the AI or exit the interface by pressing X or remaining silent. This feature aims to make using this program much more natural and fluid in everyday life. It is currently being gradually rolled out in version 1.25051.10.0 of the assistant. Not all Insider members will receive it immediately.
