Your old iPad is getting a critical update, install it

While recent iPads already benefit from iPadOS 18, Apple continues to follow older models with a specific security update. iPadOS 17.7.8 is aimed in particular at users of the 2017 iPad Pro and sixth-generation iPad. A version that we recommend you install without delay to strengthen the security of your Apple tablet.

A catch-up update for some iPads after an annoying bug

This new version replaces iPadOS 17.7.7, which was quickly withdrawn by Apple following numerous malfunctions. Several users had reported repeated disconnections from apps from the App Store, making the experience particularly unstable.

With iPadOS 17.7.8, Apple is attempting to correct this situation by ensuring a reliable update for devices that cannot upgrade to iPadOS 18. This mainly concerns the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro from 2017, as well as the iPad 6 from 2018, which are still widely used.

Critical security fixes

Apple strongly recommends installing this version, which includes several security fixes. While not all technical details are revealed in the announcement, we do know that memory corruption and unauthorized access to sensitive data on disk have been addressed.

This type of vulnerability can be exploited to execute malicious code or compromise user privacy. The patch is therefore a preventative measure to limit any risk on older iPads, which are often more vulnerable to recent threats. To install the update on your iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
